How Correct Water Intake Can Help with Migraine Relief
Recent studies point to a direct relationship between adequate water intake and relief of migraine symptoms. Check out:
Those who suffer from the dreaded migraine attacks know how a headache can ruin an entire day’s plans. The triggers are diverse and uncertain: a stressful day at work, a few hours without eating, or simply exposure to a hectic environment.
When she arrives, it’s hard to think about anything else.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about 15% of the world population suffers from migraine. In Brazil alone, there are 30 million people diagnosed with the disease.
Migraine: symptoms, cause and treatment
Migraine is the popular name given to migraine, a condition linked to an intense and episodic headache. More frequent in young people and adolescents, especially among female patients, migraine is a disease caused by neurovascular disorders of genetic predisposition.
With extremely uncomfortable symptoms, migraine is on the list of most disabling diseases classified by the WHO. The reason is clear: migraine attacks go beyond extreme headaches, also causing nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light and noise, blurred vision and dizziness. A set of symptoms that lead to total indisposition.
There are some variations for the disease: migraine with aura (one in which sensory and visual changes precede the headache, signaling the crisis), migraine without aura (no symptoms prior to pain), chronic migraine (a condition in which the person feels pain intense head for at least 15 days per month) and migraine in saved (lasting up to 1 hour of intense pain on one side of the head and around the eye, accompanied by tearing in view, on a daily basis).
For each frame there is a correct treatment. Therefore, it is essential that a physician be consulted for a clinical evaluation. But, like all illnesses, daily habits are able to prevent and alleviate the symptoms of the crisis. Among them (and perhaps the main one) is the adequate consumption of water.
The importance of hydration for symptom control
The importance of water intake is a recurrent subject here, especially when the topic is health. Despite the efforts of health authorities to promote better hydration habits among the population, some people still find it difficult to relate adequate water consumption to its direct benefits and end up not paying the necessary attention to the issue.
For the case of migraine, in particular, the importance of water has a simple explanation: according to experts, the less hydrated the body is, the less volume of blood is created, which leads to dilation of blood vessels. The loss of electrolytes caused by this process can generate signs of pain.
This is shown by an experiment published by the American Academy of Neurology. To understand the effect of adequate hydration in patients with chronic headaches, researchers gathered a group of people with this condition and separated them into two smaller groups.
Patients in the first group received a dose of placebo, while the second group was instructed to drink 1.5 liters more water than the amount already consumed in their routines.
After two weeks of the experiment, the scientists found that research participants included in the second group felt 21 hours of pain during the entire period than participants in the placebo group, in addition to reporting a decrease in the intensity of headaches.
Avoid substitutions
In addition, it is not recommended that water intake be replaced by other beverages such as coffee or soft drinks. Despite the belief that coffee relieves migraine symptoms, studies show that caffeine can trigger attacks of the disease.
This evidence was mentioned in recent research clarifying that coffee and other caffeinated beverages should not be used as a treatment, as their effect is uncertain, sometimes harmful, sometimes beneficial.
As popular language well advises: it’s good not to be unlucky.
And yet about hydration, there’s a reminder. Ideally, water should be consumed at room temperature, as cold drinks can also aggravate the pain.
